Acer griseum, commonly known as the Paperbark Maple, is a distinguished small tree first introduced to England by the renowned plant hunter, Ernst Wilson. It is celebrated for its unique and elegant peeling bark, which ranges in colour from cinnamon to reddish-brown. This distinctive bark resembles peeling paper, providing a captivating and textured display throughout the year. As the tree matures, the peeling bark reveals polished inner layers, adding a refined touch to its appearance. To enhance the visual impact of the bark, it is advisable to periodically lift the canopy by removing the lower branches, further showcasing the trees magnificent trunk.
Growing to approximately 3m in height within 15 years, Acer griseum forms an elegantly rounded crown. The foliage starts as a rich dark green in the spring and summer, transforming into vibrant shades of red in the autumn. The real beauty of the Paperbark Maple is most apparent during the autumn sunrise, when its leaves blaze in spectacular reds and its translucent bark glows with the morning light. The effect can be so striking that the tree appears to be ablaze, thanks to its lack of a defined leader and its tendency to break low down, enhancing the fiery image.
The Paperbark Maple is highly valued for its ease of maintenance and resilience in urban environments, making it an excellent choice for parks and urban landscapes. Its adaptability to varying conditions and minimal need for intervention make it a practical yet beautiful addition to any outdoor space.
Despite its many advantages, Acer griseum produces relatively low quantities of fertile seeds, highlighting the importance of cultivation and care for this remarkable tree. Hillier continues to lead the way in nurturing and supplying this fantastic species through our field nursery, ensuring that the beauty of the Paperbark Maple can be enjoyed for years to come.
