Ilex aquifolium ‘Marijo’, commonly known as ‘Marijo Holly’ is a cultivar of the evergreen holly species, Ilex aquifolium. Originating from Pennsylvania in 1964, this small and compact tree is renowned for its attractive foliage and ornamental berries.
The Marijo holly features glossy, dark green leaves with a distinctive holly shape. The foliage is spiny, displaying sharp, pointed edges that add texture and visual interest. The spines also serve as a natural defence mechanism for the tree, deterring animals and pests from eating its foliage. Leaves remain on the tree all year around and provide an excellent backdrop for other trees.
One of the standout features of Marijo holly is its large, vibrant red berries which develop from inconspicuous white flowers. These are not only visibly appealing, but are a valuable food source for birds. Berries last throughout the winter months, adding a splash of colour to the landscape when many plants are dormant.
A charming evergreen tree that offers year-round beauty with its glossy foliage and red berries. It’s an excellent choice for those seeking a compact tree that is both ornamental and easy to maintain.
