Maytenus boaria, commonly known as Mayten tree, is a slow growing, graceful tree which is a perfect alternative to Olive and the Weeping Willow. Unlike Willow, the Maytens roots aren’t invasive. Native to Chile, South America, its seeds were introduced to Britain in the mid-1920s by H.F Comber and Clarence Elliott.
In spring, the Mayten tree produces clusters of inconspicuous flowers, typically greenish white in colour. They are adored by bees and said to create the best tasting honey. Following the flowering phase, the tree produces one of its most striking features; Small, pea-sized fruit capsules enclosed in a red aril. If you’re visiting Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, have a look at the Mayten trees outside Jermyns house. They are truly spectacular sight in autumn when they are covered in fruit.
Cattle love to graze on Mayten leaves, hence ‘boaria’ which means ‘of or for cattle’ in Latin. Leaves are willow-like, mid-green on top and paler on the underside. They are tapered on both ends, narrow and lance shaped. The Maytenus is an evergreen tree meaning it will stay green all year round.
Overall, Maytenus boaria is a splendid tree that combines beauty and adaptability. Its tolerance to diverse conditions makes it a favoured choice for landscaping.
