Ulmus ‘San Zanobi’ is a one of the earlier Resista elms, and was released for commercial sale in 2002. It’s a cross between the Dutch hybrid Ulmus ‘Plantyn’ and Ulmus pumila and is named after Saint Zenobious, a bishop of Florence. It’s said that his funeral procession brought a dead elm back to life.
The foliage of the ‘San Zanobi’ is large, glossy and lanceolate. During spring, leaves emerge a fresh green colour transitioning to a darker green as summer arrives. Leaves stay well into autumn, but don’t display much autumn colour.
‘San Zanobi’branching is strongly fastigiate. Its narrow, columnar to pyramidal shape make it a great tree for urban areas. It’s a great alternative to Ulmus columnella, when lesser shade is needed.
