It is with great sadness that we announce the pass It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Hillier—a respected plantsman, devoted family man, and beloved figure in the horticultural world.
Born in Winchester as the eldest son of Sir Harold Hillier, John grew up surrounded by plants and the family’s horticultural legacy. At 17, the family moved to Jermyns House, where his father developed the renowned Sir Harold Hillier Gardens.
After working briefly in the family business, John served National Service in Libya before gaining experience in U.S. nurseries. There, he observed pioneering container plant production—knowledge that helped modernise Hillier Nurseries on his return.
John’s long association with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show began in 1958. Over 60 years, he led Hillier’s award-winning exhibits, achieving an astounding 74 consecutive Chelsea Gold Medals. His passion extended nationally. He joined RHS committees, helped judge Wisley Trials, and advocated for the RHS Award of Garden Merit as a trusted guide for gardeners. He was also a regular judge at RHS shows and served as President of Plant Heritage Hampshire, promoting garden plant conservation.
Internationally, John travelled widely with groups like the International Dendrology Society, exploring native habitats and retracing the paths of legendary plant hunters. He worked closely with Roy Lancaster on later editions of the Hillier Manual of Trees and Shrubs, a staple reference for gardeners. In recognition of his contributions, John was awarded the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour in 1996, following his father and grandfather’s achievements to receive the Society’s highest accolade.
He was a devoted husband to Val, proud father of Pepe, Andrew, Martin, and James, and loving grandfather to nine grandchildren. He treasured his faith, time with his family, his own garden and daily walks in the arboretum where his passion for plants thrived.
John Hillier leaves behind a legacy rooted in knowledge, kindness, and horticultural excellence. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Always our pleasure to host friends! Despite the Always our pleasure to host friends!
Despite the drizzle@colvinandmoggridge gave a full turnout from both their Filkins and London studios for a tree safari at our open ground. Landscape legend Hal Moggridge making the journey to Andler’s Ash to walk the acres alongside his team and with @jameshilliertrees, @carolineswannathillier and Kate Griffiths discussing Hillier tree production, responsible farming practices across the 700 acres of growing land, crop rotations and transplantation. We toured saleable stock between 12cm – 90cm while chatting on tree suitability for different environments, practical knowledge on tagging and when to secure your trees for forward planning as well as sharing knowledge on lifting, contract potting, long project call-off and despatch.
Thank you for making the journey!

As #planthealthweek 2025 comes to a close, we're r As #planthealthweek 2025 comes to a close, we're reflecting on the collaborative effort it takes to protect the UK's #plants and #trees. This year's focus has been on recognising the value plants bring to our every day lives, and the understanding that everyone has a role to play.
We're proud of this ongoing movement, because healthy plants means healthy people, ecosystems, and economies. The stats speak for themselves:
🌍Plants remove 1.3 billion kg of air pollutants in the UK each year
🌳UK forests store 4 billion tonnes of CO2.
🧠Doubling local tree species can increase reported mental wellbeing by over 5%
💵Ornamental horticulture supports over 335,000 UK jobs and adds £11.4 billion to the economy
From sourcing responsibly, to monitoring for pests, small actions make a big difference!

Today is Trade Day as part of #planthealthyweek, a Today is Trade Day as part of #planthealthyweek, a chance to spotlight the behind-the-scenes work the industry does to protect UK plant health.
Plant pests and diseases are becoming more of a concern, and they're costing the UK billions each year. In 2023, the plant and commodity trade hit £18.1 billion, with £16.3 billion of that coming from imports.
When trading plants, ensure you look out for the following to support plant health and prevent the spread of pests and diseases:
✔️Check for plant health certification - look for suppliers with recognised plant health certifications.
✔️ Inspect plants for signs of pests - Always look closely at plants for any visible pests, unusual spots, or damage.
✔️Ask about biosecurity practices - make sure your supplier regularly monitors and trains staff in plant health and biosecurity measures.
✔️Buy from trusted sources - Ensure the plants are from reputable, local nurseries, or authorised sellers.
✔️Consider the plants origin - Be mindful of where your plants are coming from, especially if imported.
Together, we can all play a role in protecting our plants and landscapes. 🌍
