Betula ermanii, commonly known as Erman’s birch, is a deciduous tree which originates from North East Asia. It’s graceful and vigorous, and highly regarded for its attractive features. For this reason, the tree is a very popular choice for large gardens, parks and landscapes.
Erman’s birch is early shooting in spring and will reveal alternate, three-pointed to heart shaped leaves. These are coarsely toothed and conspicuously veined. Leaves will turn dark green in summer and the crown will become denser, offering shade and shelter to various wildlife. In autumn, leaves will transition to a stunning yellow-orange.
It is easy to understand why the ermanii is often utilised as an ornamental tree; its red-orange-brown twigs sit fantastically against the trees yellow, shaggy bark. This captivating contrast along with its stunning foliage, make Betula ermanii a good focal point in open spaces.
