From the renowned Paul brothers who eventually pursued separate ventures establishing rival nurseries, both gained acclaim for their exquisite Victorian roses. William, in particular, extended his expertise to enhance various plants, trees and shrubs beyond roses.

Originating as a mutation of the Crataegus Rosea Flora Plena found in Hereford garden, this unique variant caught William’s attention due to its distinct scarlet rose hue. Intrigued, he propagated and nurtured it, resulting in the creating of the Crataegus media ‘Paul’s Scarlet’.

This hawthorn inherits the resilience of its parents, flourishing in diverse settings. It bides its time until late spring, unveiling the most beautiful floral spectacle towards the end of May. The tree bursts forth with scarlet blooms, featuring double-layered flowers that drape the entire canopy, presenting a lavish display of layered petals.

Emerging as emerald green, the deeply lobed leaves contrast with their lighter undersides, safeguarding the developing fruit that matures by autumn. The tree becomes adorned with clusters of succulent red to black haws, attracting birds with their vibrant and abundant display.

An excellent choice for adding colour and creating habitats in challenging environments.
