Metasequoia glyptostroboides, is commonly known as Dawn redwood, which refers to the dawn of time. Originally thought to have been extinct for 5 million years, the dawn redwood was rediscovered in 1946 by a Professor of the National Central University in China. Since then, it has captivated botanists, horticulturists, and nature enthusiasts around the world. Today, it is widely cultivated and admired for its aesthetic appeal, impressive growth, and unique place in botanical history.
One of the few deciduous conifers, Metasequoia glyptostroboides foliage is a flat feathery needle which is arranged in an opposite manager along the stems. They emerge bright green in spring, transition to a rich green in summer and a vibrant bronze to orange-brown in autumn. Its autumnal display creates a breath-taking spectacle as the tree prepares for winter dormancy.
Beyond its ornamental value, the dawn redwood holds great botanical significance. Its discovery as a living fossil challenged the existing understanding of the trees evolutionary history and sparked widespread scientific interest. A perfect tree to plant in an avenue or large park where its history will generate interest.
