Discovered in the 1600’s growing between a Platanus orientalis and Platanus occidentalis at Vauxhall Gardens in London, this hybrid has become a staple in urban streets across Europe. Revered for its ability to absorb small carbon particles of urban pollution, it played a crucial role during the Victorian industrial revolution in combating smog-laden impurities. Resilient to ground competition and hard surfaces, it establishes well in condensed root spaces.
Featuring large 5 lobed leaves reminiscent of the Maple, this trees foliage initially bears small fibrous hairs on the underside when young, which are shed as the leaves mature through summer., which can be an irritant to asthma sufferers. While the hardy nature of the tree contributes to slow leaf decomposition, requiring autumn maintenance, it is a popular practice to heavily prune the trees back to the trunk as standing pollards. This minimises the leaves canopy creating a pleasant avenue of lollipop forms.
The characterful bark, shedding while absorbing pollution, flakes in distinct patches resembling camouflage. A fresh pollard avenue planting gives the impression of army soldiers standing to attention. Left to grow, the canopy forms a large, impressive crown making it suitable as a singular feature within the landscape.
Hillier specialise in developing and growing mature pre-pollard Planes with 4m, 5m and 6m clear stems, featuring a pollard formed close to the trunk. These are specifically crafted for high streets with multi-story infrastructure, ensuring visibility clearance.

Useful ResourcesSize
Large
13m high x 6m wide after 25 years
Environment
A favoured choice for streets and avenues, particularly in densly populated areas.
Canopy
Begins broadly columnar and becomes more irregular as it matures.
Foliage
Palmate, deeply lobed leaves look similar to Norway Maple. These appear fresh green during the summer, becoming shades of brown in the autumn.
Bark
Its distinct bark sheds as it takes in small particle pollutants. This creates characterful flaky patches of green, cream and browns that extend up the trunk like an army solider in camouflage.
Fruit
Round, spiky and brown, typically appearing in 2.
Resilience
Establishes in difficult, but well drained soils including clay. Tolerates hard surfaces, urban pollution including storm water run-off. Its acceptance of pruning and severe pollard programmes enables its use almost anywhere.
