Tilia cordata ‘Streetwise’ is a medium to large tree raised at Hillier. It has an excellent form, is fast growing and is specifically bred to thrive in urban environments. An excellent choice for planting along streets and pavements.
When it was selected on our nurseries in 1980, it was conspicuous by its ‘well-behaved’ characteristics, ascending branches and even, robust branch structure. These coupled with a very healthy vigour set it apart from other seedlings. As the years progressed, these beneficial characteristics continued through to maturity and so it was introduced, formally to our range over the millennium. It rivals Tilia cordata ‘Greenspire’ due to its strong branching unions, darker leaves and faster growing rate.
Like the rest of the species, the Streetwise small-leaved lime is attractive to bees and many other insects. It is aphid free and therefore does not suffer from honeydew. As a result, it is ideal for car parks, streets, and avenues. It is favoured by tree managers and specifiers for its robustness. and form. It is also a personal favourite of Hossein Arshadi, former Hillier Trees Director.
