Ilex x koehneana ‘Chestnut Leaf’

Ilex x koheneana ‘Chestnut Leaf’, commonly known as Chestnut Leaf Holly, is a hybrid, evergreen tree resulting from a cross between Ilex aquifolium and Ilex latifolia. This French selection combines the desirable characteristics of both parent plants, creating a visually appealing and reliant tree.

The Chestnut Leaf holly features spikey, elongated leaves, and as the common name suggests, are similar to that of Sweet Chestnut. They are a luscious shade of emerald and are waxy and quite coriaceous to touch.

One of the distinguishing features is its profusion of bright red berries which will appear when a male form is close by. These dominate the branches with dark ruby shades of red that are blushed with warming orange. They ripen later in winter than other hollies, and provide much needed winter nutrients to grateful birds.

Chestnut Leaf holly is known for its hardiness and can thrive in various soil types, as long as it is well-drained. Its non-evasive roots and form are particularly suited for roof gardens and inner-city terraces.
