Prunus x schmittii, commonly known as Schmitts Cherry, is a beautiful deciduous tree that is a result of crossing Prunus canescens and Prunus avium. It was bred in 1923 and was named after Dr. Richard Schmitt, an American horticulturist who played a significant role in developing and popularising this particular cultivar.
During spring, Schmitts Cherry displays a captivating floral spectacle with its profusion of delicate, fragrant blossoms. Its leaves, elliptical and elongated in shape are a dark green in summer before melting into mellow buttered popcorn shades of yellow in autumn. Once the leaves have dropped, the tree will display perhaps its most striking feature; its bark. With its remarkable mahogany glow, the Prunus x schmittiis bark shines with vitality. Its lenticles swipe horizontally adding texture to the tree and creating an all-season prominent feature.
