Prunus ‘Spire’ was originated and raised at our very own Hillier Nurseries in the early 1920’s, resulting from a hybrid that involved Prunus sargentii and Prunus yedoensis.
Its canopy takes on a narrow pillar shape, with ascending branches that gracefully arch at the tips as the tree matures, forming an elegant vase shape. The original tree, still thriving at Hillier, has reached a height of 10m, showcasing a broad crown. During spring, it develops blossoms that creates a vision of light and airy pink clouds.
The blossoms emerge from dark pink buds, revealing flowers in varying shades of white and subtle pinks. The blossoms provide a striking contrast to the unfolding green leaves. As autumn arrives, leaves transition into a vibrant display of purples and reds, adding warmth to any location.
Regarded as one of the finest choices for compact urban spaces, the Prunus ‘Spire’ excels as a small street tree, particularly in tight urban locations. Its suitability for narrow residential streets, where doorsteps meet the pavement, is enhanced by its easy maintenance. Creating a compact avenue of seasonal beauty, these trees enhance the surroundings without overcrowding the area.
