At Hillier, we grow and supply trees that are built to last. Our focus is on trees that perform well in real planting conditions across the UK. From urban streets and public parks to housing developments and private estates, the right tree can transform a space. It can improve biodiversity, add structure, and deliver long-term environmental value.

As the next planting season approaches, we’ve selected five trees that our customers trust time and again. Each offers proven strength, good form, and reliable performance across a wide range of landscape projects.

Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’ (Worplesdon Sweetgum)

Vibrant and versatile, Liquidambar ‘Worplesdon’ is an excellent choice for adding seasonal colour and structure. It performs particularly well in parks, housing developments, and public open spaces.

Its deeply lobed leaves turn rich shades of amber, crimson, and deep purple in autumn. As a result, it delivers strong visual impact later in the year. In addition, ‘Worplesdon’ shows good tolerance to frost and wind. Its upright habit makes it suitable for avenues and larger urban planting schemes where long term presence matters.

Acer campestre ‘Streetwise’ (Streetwise Field Maple)

Compact, hardy, and dependable, Acer campestre ‘Streetwise’ is one of the best field maples for urban use. Its narrow, upright crown suits streets, car parks, and pedestrian areas where space is limited.

Moreover, this adaptable tree thrives in most soil types. It tolerates both drought and occasional waterlogging. In autumn, its foliage turns a warm golden yellow, bringing colour to smaller or more enclosed sites.

Ulmus ‘New Horizon’ (New Horizon Elm)

Ulmus ‘New Horizon’ represents the return of elm to the UK landscape. This disease-resistant variety offers strong protection against Dutch Elm Disease.

It performs well in urban areas, parks, and open spaces. Over time, it develops a broad, rounded canopy with fresh green leaves that turn yellow in autumn. As a result, ‘New Horizon’ combines traditional character with modern resilience.

Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ (Ornamental Pear)

Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ is a proven performer and a long-standing favourite within the Hillier range. In spring, it produces masses of white blossom. This is followed by glossy green foliage that turns red and orange in autumn.

Importantly, ‘Chanticleer’ holds its leaves later than many trees. This extends seasonal interest well into autumn. Its compact, upright form makes it ideal for streets, courtyards, and car parks.

Carpinus betulus ‘Lucas’ (Lucas Hornbeam)

Elegant and strong, Carpinus betulus ‘Lucas’ is a refined hornbeam with a naturally upright shape, making it ideal for formal avenues, housing developments and landscapes where structure and symmetry matter

In addition, ‘Lucas’ performs reliably across a wide range of soils. It tolerates wind and pollution and responds well to pruning. Unlike other hornbeam varieties, its autumn foliage remains on the tree throughout winter, rivalling the longevity of the Fagus sylvatica leaves, making it an excellent choice for maintaining colour and structure in the colder months.
