Carpinus betulus ‘Streetwise’, also known as the streetwise hornbeam, is a cultivar of the Carpinus betulus species. It was introduced by retired Hillier Director, Hossein Arshadi, who was selecting our more upright cultivars to work within urban environments.

One of the most notable characteristics of the Carpinus betulus ‘Streetwise’, is its exceptional adaptability to urban environments. It can withstand pollution, compacted soils and other stress factors commonly found in urban environments. This makes it an excellent choice for street planting, parks and other landscaping projects in busy streets or areas with heavy foot traffic.

Another advantage of streetwise hornbeam is its low maintenance requirements. It has good resistance to pest and diseases, reducing the need for constant monitoring. It has a moderate growth rate meaning it can be easily managed and pruned to maintain its shape and size.

Overall, Carpinus betulus ‘Streetwise’ is a robust and versatile tree cultivar that combines aesthetic appeal with adaptability to urban environments.
