Introduced to Britain in the 18th century, this majestic evergreen tree boasts an impressive lifespan, with some of the original Victorian era specimens still gracing our landscapes today.
Renowned for its resilience, this tree thrives in a variety of soil types, including heavy sand, chalk, and loam. Preferring full sun and well-draining soil to avoid waterlogging, its particularly adept at withstanding the corrosive effects of salt. This makes it an excellent choice for coastal areas, serving as an effective windbreak against salt-laden winds and even tolerating salt residues from winter road treatments. Furthermore, its resilience to urban pollutants and stormwater runoff makes it a favoured selection for planting along A-roads and roundabouts.
The trees needles, growing in pairs, exhibit a rich emerald hue, denser than those of our native Pines. Each year, new growth emerges with a distinctive waxy beige tone, resembling upright candles at the branch tips. With a growth rate of approximately 60cm annually, the tree forms a commanding canopy but can be pruned and shaped according to specific requirements.
Its versatility shines through in various applications, such as a recent project where it was strategically planting to form a protective corridor from a sports hall to playing fields. Planted in two rows, this configuration not only provides a welcoming entrance, but also shields exposed grounds from prevailing winds.
