Prunus ‘Shirofugen’, sometimes known as Prunus ‘Fugenzo’ is a sturdy tree of medium size, featuring a broad, expansive growth habit. This time honoured cultivar has been grown in Japan since the 1400’s. Its generous double flowers start as pink buds, evolving into a pristine white display. This gives rise to its Japanese name which translates to ‘White God’.
As these blossoms mature, they transition to an enchanting purple-pink shade, providing a captivating contrast against the emerging bronze foliage. Notably ‘Shirofugen’ blooms later than many, typically gracing us with its flowers from late spring to early summer. Despite its late bloom, the flowers persist for an extended period. Among the Japanese Cherry varieties, ‘Shirofugen’ stands out for its grand size.
