This beautiful Magnolia is a hybrid between Magnolia liliflora ‘Nigra’ and the English cultivar Magnolia sprengeri ‘Diva’. It was crossed at the U.S national arboretum in 1963 and supplied commercially in the 80s. An elegant tree well suited for prominent housing estates and new developments.
Magnolia ‘Galaxy’ has a strong central leader with fluid branches that flow upwards. As the tree matures, this creates a rounded upright canopy. Its densely branched and gives fantastic shelter to birds and other wildlife.
The real feature of the tree is its fragrant blossoms. These emerge from deep red buds which develop in early spring and are slightly fragrant. Their shades of candyfloss pink and water-brushed purple are strikingly beautiful and last long into the early summer. Once flowers have displayed their beauty, they give way to subtle green summer foliage which covers the tree.
