Sorbus hupehensis

Sorbus hupehensis, commonly known as Chinese Rowan, is native to central and western China and was first introduced to the UK by Ernest Wilson in 1910. It is a captivating deciduous tree known for its ornamental qualities and elegant appearance.

The Chinese Rowan is a particularly strong growing tree, with a rounded to broadly spreading crown, and a bold compact head of ascending purple-brown branches. Its pinnate leaves have 11-17 leaflets and create a dense crown. These are a striking blue-green colour, transition to shades of red in the autumn before falling in winter.

During late spring and early summer, Sorbus hupehensis produces clusters of small, white flowers in attractive corymbs. These give way to small, persistent white fruits that are tinged with pink. These hold onto the tree until February, providing both visual interest and a food source for wildlife.

Adaptable to various soil types and tolerant of urban conditions, the Chinese Rowan is well-suited for landscaping in parks, gardens and residential areas. It is relatively slow growing compared to Sorbus ‘Glowing Pink’.
