Ulmus ‘Fiorente’ commonly known as Fiorente Elm, is a strikingly beautiful tree. The name of the variety reflects its origin: Florence, Italy. It is a hybrid of the cultivar Ulmus puinela x minor and became commercially available in 2008.
Fiorente leaves are asymmetrical with a short stalk. They are glossy and yellow-green when they first emerge in spring, transitioning to a mid-green in summer. Leaves are rougher on the upper surface and pubescent underneath. In autumn, foliage will transition into a yellow. The tree will cling on to branches well into winter making it the last of the Resista Elms to drop its leaves.
A relatively low-maintenance and fast-growing tree, it’s a suitable choice for planting next to roads, in an avenue or park. It tolerates wind well, so is also a fantastic tree for a coastal area.
